About Activity Inspired Rehabilitation, Inc

A Letter From our President
Nick

AIR's (Activity Inspired Rehabilitation) mission is to address homelessness and addiction in the community through endurance running programs that support and inspire incremental achievement and a positive connection with the community.

Three years ago, when I founded AIR, I knew that it would take a community effort to make it happen. Since that time, I have learned that the running community in Colorado is comprised of individuals and organizations that are more than interested in having a long-term investment in their communities on varying levels. This can be seen on any given weekend at various races and running events throughout the state, as men, women, and youth who were once struggling with homelessness, addiction, and alcoholism come across finish lines, from 5k's to ultra-marathons, with their arms stretched out, smiling with the elation of accomplishment and success.

This success is the result of so many community leaders and heroes working together to support AIR's efforts. These leaders and heroes include retail sponsors, race directors, running clubs, personal trainers, running related sports publications, individual runner volunteers, and citizen donors. As a result of the efforts of these individuals, AIR participants engage in a running program that is second to none.

Running gear, including shoes, active-wear, hydration and nutrition products, and watches are provided through retail sponsors. Race directors work with AIR by giving blocks of complimentary entries and/or providing volunteer opportunities for AIR participants in trade for race entries. Running clubs provide complimentary membership for AIR participants to become connected with the community of runners that embrace our sport and an overall active, healthy lifestyle. Training is provided by AIR, and is staffed by professional personal trainers. Running publications help out by creating awareness about the program and partnering in silent auctions. Individual runners embrace the participants on the course and come to runner meetings, providing food and moral support. And last, but certainly not least, the program is supported by citizens and organizations who provide monetary support at all levels.

This effort defines community. This gives substance to the concept of mutual giving, as so many organizations, many whom operate in a very competitive environment, partner to provide the opportunity to help people who are willing to help themselves.

In the coming months, we will be sharing stories about our participants. Many of these individuals are, for the first time in their lives, embracing a positive relationship with the community. From cold nights on the street, to long periods of repeated failure, incomplete experiences, and a cycle of destructive living, they have come to accept a life of faith and health. Through supporting these efforts, the running community is helping these individuals to turn their lives around and put the past behind them.

As we move forward as a community, putting feet on the street for all the right reasons, remember to congratulate these runners as we all run with purpose and run with hope.

Sincerely,
Nick Sterner ,
President of Activity Inspired Rehabilitation, Inc
